Grammarian

Asheville Toastmasters club was among the first to introduce the role of a grammarian. This member is responsible for monitoring the grammar of speakers throughout the meeting. It is a challenging, but very rewarding duty because it requires very focused listening skills (remember, great communicators are listeners as well as speakers). The grammarian listens to things such as sentence structure, the use of words in context, and in particular, irregular or interrupted speaking styles. A speaker who constantly begins sentences with the word "I", or uses "filler" words such as "er" and "um" will usually receive feedback from the grammarian during the grammarians report which happens toward the end of the meeting.
One very effective tool used by the grammarian is a small air horn which is sounded whenever an experienced speaker uses these "filler" words.

The grammarian also provides a "word of the day". This is often a word which is not used in everyday vocabulary, and challenges members to find a way to use the word at some time during the meeting.
