are many misconceptions about Toastmasters so a brief summary of a typical
meeting might be useful. Asheville Toastmasters, like most clubs has some uniqueness, but the general principles are those recommended by Toastmasters International. |

A
TYPICAL MEETING

Meetings usually begin promptly at 6:15pm with an invocation and introduction of members and guests. If you are a guest, you are welcomed before the meeting begins by the Sargeant at Arms and most of the members in attendance. Once the meeting is called to order, a member is asked to introduce any guests so there is no need to worry about having to stand up and introduce yourself to the group - you will be introduced by an assigned member. Parliamentary procedures play a large part in the "business" section of the meeting, so the President calls for the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, old business, new business and announcements, plus reports from any committees. It's not at all unusual for members to have fun with this part of the meeting and challenge the President by placing him/her "on the spot". Calls for a ban on naked animals, re-routing the I-240 cut-through and abolishing fall to prevent us from having to sweep leaves have all been proposed in the past . . though for some reason, non were adopted! Following the business meeting, there is usually a brief recess for 10 minutes or so (remember, the meeting is held in a restaurant at dinner time so most members eat during the proceedings).
